401 Wilhelm Friedrich Matter, son of Michael Matter and Friederike Zulke, was born in Jassow, Kries Kammin, Pomerania, Prussia on April 25, 1833. At age 8, Wilhelm immigrated to America with his parents and settled near Kirchhayn, Wisconsin.

On January 26, 1858 he married Ms. Wilhelmine Marie Sophia Erdmann. They were parents of 14 children: Ferdinand, Albertine, Johanne, Anna "Elizabeth", Carl "Willie", Otto, Frank, Ida, Sara "Wilhelmina", Henry, Paulina, Helen, and Bertha. Their second child died at 2-days-old.

Wilhelm bought and worked his father's homestead farm in Germantown Township. He lived there until his death in 1911.
