Ira Zina Byington
William Alma Byington

NOTE: In the 1880 census Lillie is listed as a child of Joseph and Nancy Maria Byington. But her full birth name was Blanche Lillian Stowe (1872-1922). Her mother is Nancy Maranda Byington (first child of Joseph Henry & Nancy Maria Byington). After Lillie was orphaned, she was raised by her grandparents, Joseph and Nancy Maria Byington.

NOTE: Nancy personally recorded her own birth date as 25 December 1830. In the 1930 census, her parents didn't have any children listed. Therefore, her birthdate on her headstone is incorrect.

The 1850 Census says Nancy was 20 years old. The 1880 Census says she was 50, and the 1900 Census says she was born "Dec. 1830."

Obituary in the American Falls Press, 30 January 1913, Volume XL, No. 15, Power County, Idaho.

Grandma Boyington Dies.

Well beloved old lady dies at son's home in Rockland.-Interesting career.

Mrs. Nancy Boyington, aged 83 years [sic], and one month, died Saturday at the home of her son William, at Rockland. Old age and general debility were the contributing causes of her demise. Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock her funeral was conducted in Rockland by Bishop Andrew May, interment was made in the cemetery there.

Mrs. Boyington was a native of Pennsylvania, but since her pilgrimage across the plains with the Mormon pioneer wagon trains in 1848, she has been a resident well beloved and reverd [sic], of the Great West. For nearly thirty-five years she had lived in Idaho, and many there are who will feel in her death a sense of personal loss.

Five sons and three daughters of Mrs. Boyington's family survive and grieve for her. They are Jos. H. Boyington, of Rockland, John Boyingotn [sic] of Dempsey, Hiram Boyington of Dempsey; Ira and William Boyington of Rockland; Mrs. Henry Hoffman of Great Falls, Mont.; Mrs. J. J. Sorenson [sic] of Neeley, and Mrs. Charles Rudine of Neeley.

Heather Sorensen McPhie wrote:

It appears that Nancy Maria Avery Byington did not have a death certificate recorded. The law only began to require death certificates in 1911, and it seems Rockland may have been behind the times.

Now, here is my take on this. When Nancy received her temple endowments, she recorded her birth date as 25 December 1830. I think that is correct. The gravestone lists 26 December 1826. The year is obviously wrong, because Nancy was not born when the 1830 US Census was taken. I think the "26" is incorrect, too.

Also, the obituary states she died on Saturday at the age of 83 and one month. The trick is that the Saturday before the 30th of January 1913 was the 25th of January. My opinion, then is that she probably did die on Saturday, 25 January 1913, at the age of 82 years and one month. I think the gravestone got it wrong. Also, she would have been only 82 years and one month old when she died; her birthday would not have been until December when she turned 83.

764 Married: Joseph Henry Byington on 31 Oct 1913 in Pocatello, Bannock, Idaho

Viola died on 2 Jul 1981 in the hospital in Twin Falls, Idaho. She had suffered a stroke the day before. She was taken to the hospital in Twin. Most of the grandchildren got to spend a bit of time with her before she was called home. She was able to have one of the dearest wishes of her heart right up to the very end...that she be able to be independent and take care of herself.

Viola was raised by her grandparents for the first eight years of her life. In the last year of her life, she shared these memories of them.

"I lived with them and went to school. They lived quite a ways up on a hill, and I would walk to school, carry my lunch, and go to school…just lived with them just like it was my home.

One night, this was after my father had died in Plain City, (that would have been John Rogers Miller)…they had taken me there. Grandma said it was just before Christmas, and grandpa never milked his cows till a certain time, he always milked at a certain time in the morning and a certain time at night. He had two cows."

In the last years of her life, Viola admitted to her granddaughter (Karen Byington Davis) that she was illegitimate. She was born previous to their marriage on 2 Aug 1894. Viola said that John Rogers Miller was her father and she went by his name.
