    • Salisbury Center - The funeral of George L. Byington was held Monday at 10 o'clock from his late residence and was largely attended. Mr. Byington passed away Saturday morning after haveing been confined to his bed but a few days. He had been in ill health for a number of years, however and last winter while he and Mrs. Byington were on a visit with friends in Oneida Castle they were both prostrated with the grip, and Mr. Byington never fully recovered from the effects of the attack. deceased had been a resident of this village having moved here with his parents from Connecticut when a young man. He was born in Connecticut in October 1818, making him at time of death 80 years and six months of age. He served on the Union side during the civil war and was a gunsmith by profession, having made and repaired guns in the shop now owned by Edward Kingsley. In his younger days Mr. Byington took a very active part in politics and was a Republican. Aside from several years of service in minor offices he was supervisor of this town during the years 1867, 1868 and 1869 and served as town clerk during the years 1844 and 1866."       The above obituary and this additional information contributed by Diane Turner: George Lewis Byington had two wives, first Charlotte Cool (11/13/1824-10/13/1866)who he married 11/13/1844 and second, Lovica J. Bliss, born around 1828, who he married 12/17/1868. Of the second marriage they had a daughter Mary Charlotte Byington. George and Lovica show up in the censuses for Salisbury in 1870, 1880 and 1892.
