DEATH REMOVES ONE OF COUNTY’S BEST KNOWN RESIDENTS
Gustave Gates of Galesburg dies after long illness
When death yesterday noon claimed Gustave Gates aged 69 years, of Galesburg, one of the best-known pioneers of the county was removed. Mr. Gates was the brother of the late Lyman M. Gates of this city. The two years were closely affiliated in financial matters.
Mr. Gates was one time marshal of Kalamazoo, although a greater portion of his life was spent on a farm southwest of Galesburg. For years he was supervisor of Comstock township and active in the early affairs of this county.

      DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS
Gustavus M. Gates Well Known Resident on Monday Afternoon
      WAS AN 0LD SOLDIER
The many friends of Mr. Gates and big family were saddened to learn of his death yesterday, though it brings to him relief from a long illness and much suffering. He had been in failing health for a number of years and three years ago suffered a stroke of paralysis. Since then he has been about in a wheelchair but gradually failed until yesterday when death came at 1:05 p. m.
Gustavus M. Gates was born in Monroe Co., N.Y. on Christmas day, 1841. in 1362 he enlisted in Co. C. 103 the N.Y. Infantry under Capt. Andrews. He was wounded in a few months at the battle of Antitam and was disabled so that he received his discharge. He married Miss Frances Birdsell in 1864. Three children were born to them Lyman M. who died in infancy, Marion B. who lives on the home farm near here and Mrs. Clara Milham living at home. Mrs. Gates died in Kalamazoo in 1875 and in 1877 he was again married to Miss Alice Byington to whom one daughter, now Mrs. Ward Marsh of Galena Ill. was born. Mr. Gates came to Michigan in 1865, buying a farm in Eaton county, which he sold and purchased a saw mill near Hastings. Two years later he came to Kalamazoo county, living on a farm in Portage for one and one-half years. He then went to Kalamazoo where he was deputy sheriff, and later, marshal. Some years later he came to the farm south of Galesburg, living there until five years ago when he purchased the home where he resided at the time of his death. He was also supervisor of Comstock township for several years. Mr. Gates was a Mason and a Knight Templar, belonging to Kalamazoo lodge No. 8; also to Orcutt Post, G. A. R. Besides the three children mentioned he leaves a wife and one brother Curtis, of Chicago. He will be greatly missed among his friends and at home where he was ever the most thoughtful and unselfish husband and father. The funeral will be held Wednesday, at 2 p. m. from the home. The Knight Templars will have charge of the service, assisted by Prof. Mark Bailey. Burial at Mountain Home cemetery, Kalamazoo. Semi-Weekly Argus June 27, 1911 page 1
