John Ernest Byington, 79, of 1221 East Fremont, died Friday afternoon at Bannock Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Byington was born 6 May 1894, in Dempsey, now Lava Hot Springs, to John Henry and Mary Lucinda Simmons Byington. Reared and educated in Dempsey, he spent his boyhood on his parents' farm.
On 21 August 1912, he married Della M. Tolman in the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City. Mr. Byington was working for the Oregon Short Line Railroad at the time of his marriage. In 1914 they returned to Dempsey and homesteaded at Beaver Dam, above Dempsey. In 1918 the Byingtons sold the homestead and bought a farm at lava Hot Springs. He farmed there and operated a dairy for 24 years.
In 1942 he moved to Pocatello where he worked at the air base and Naval Ordinance Plant. He was employed at Albertson's and as superintendent of the courthouse and grounds until his retirement in 1958.
Mr. Byington was a high priest in the LDS 14th Ward and was active in all organizations, including MIA and Sunday School superintendent, ward clerk, high priest group leader, and counselor in a bishopric.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Roy (Mayona) Nelson, Pocatello; Mrs. Kenneth (Ancy) Chatterton, Soda Springs, and Mrs. R.J. (Lola) Galloway, Colonial Heights, Va., a son, Darrell L. Byington, Tacoma, Wash.; 22 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services conducted Tuesday at 1:00 PM in the LDS 14th Ward Chapel, at 135 South 7th Avenue, with Bishop Brent Ballif officiating. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 PM Monday evening at the Manning Funeral Chapel.
